Advancing point-of-care diagnostics through Micronit's microfluidic expertise

Micronit is pleased to showcase its role in the development of BioAnalyt’s next generation smart cuvette for the iron deficiency anemia diagnostics platform iCheck IDA. This project highlights Micronit’s strengths in microfluidic design, precision engineering, and the seamless translation of prototypes into manufacturable products.

Micronit’s leadership in design and development

Micronit served as the central development partner responsible for the complete engineering trajectory of the smart cuvette. The cuvette is designed to handle capillary blood directly from the fingertip, which demands stringent control of microfluidic geometry, surface chemistry, and optical pathway stability.

Micronit’s contributions included:

  • End to end project management, ensuring technical clarity, structured development, and efficient decision making
  • Microfluidic architecture design, optimized for controlled capillary blood uptake and reproducible optical measurement
  • Surface and material engineering, including the use of specialized hydrophilic coatings to support early functional prototypes
  • Rapid prototyping through milling, enabling fast iteration and verification of fluid handling, light transmission, and robustness
  • Preparation of the design for mass production, converting a functional prototype into an injection moldable consumable with stable, high-volume manufacturability

These activities formed the core of the project and were essential in transforming BioAnalyt’s analytical requirements into a fully production ready cuvette.

From prototype to scalable manufacturing

After the successful performance of the milled and coated prototypes, Micronit guided the transition to injection molding. This required careful refinement of geometry, tolerances, and surface characteristics to preserve analytical performance while meeting industrial manufacturing constraints.

The result is a reliable, high-quality consumable that can be produced in large volumes and integrated seamlessly into BioAnalyt’s testing workflow.

A collaborative framework supporting Micronit’s work

The project was carried out within the Microfluidics Innovation Hub framework, which provided access to a broader development environment. Bionic Surface Technologies contributed selected simulation work that supported fluid behavior optimization. These contributions complemented Micronit’s primary responsibility for design, engineering, and readiness for manufacturing.

Delivering real world impact

The smart cuvette strengthens the global accessibility of diagnostics by enabling practical testing with only a small amount of capillary blood. Through Micronit’s engineering and manufacturing expertise, the consumable is now positioned for widespread use in laboratories, field programs, and point of care settings.

Micronit’s work demonstrates how advanced microfluidic engineering can translate complex analytical requirements into reliable, user-friendly products.
