Project CLASSY: Creating a new Chemical Reactor for Molecular Synthesis

Project CLASSY: Creating a new Chemical Reactor for Molecular Synthesis

At the start of November 2019, Micronit joined project CLASSY, a FET-open Research and Innovation Action.

Molecular synthesis, the construction of complex chemical compounds from simpler ones, is at the heart of many production sectors, including pharmaceutical, agricultural, chemical, and food industries. Current chemical synthesis processes require several reaction steps and produce vast amounts of waste. This is inefficient and not sustainable. Living cells, however, can synthesize an enormous variety of complex products in a single ‘cell reactor’, without the need for many intermediate steps. With nature as their example, participants in the Classy project intend to revolutionize chemical synthesis, aiming for close to zero waste streams and a sustainable, green ‘chemical factory of the future’.

Main goal of the project

Creating a new type of chemical reactor for molecular synthesis, inspired by the way living cells act.
